Study Tour | Exploring Hong Kong’s East Coast Boardwalk: A Harbourfront Transformation

Join us for a ULI-curated tour of Hong Kong's East Coast Boardwalk, a stunning new landmark that opened in January 2025. This vibrant "Harbourfront Shared Space" features paths for walking, jogging, and cycling, alongside an exclusive pedestrian walkway. Its innovative design makes use of the area beneath the Island Eastern Corridor, enhancing the shoreline of Hong Kong Island.

Key highlights include the first movable bascule and swing bridges in Victoria Harbour, which allow vessel access while ensuring smooth pedestrian flow. Additional amenities feature seating for sunset views, a play area, fitness equipment, and a fishing platform. Nearby, the revitalized Tong Shui Road Public Pier and the enhanced North Point Promenade offer even more open spaces for leisure.

To round off our tour, we’ll take a short stroll to Chun Yeung Street Wet Market, a bustling narrow street filled with stalls offering fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and seafood. The lively atmosphere is such that the tram weaves between traders and carts. Many shops here feature unique Fujian foods that are hard to find elsewhere in Hong Kong, and you’ll hear the Fujianese dialect spoken throughout North Point. Study Tour | Evolution of the City: Discovering Hong Kong’s Public Housing Story

Hong Kong, long known for its housing scarcity, was among the early providers of public housing estates in Asia. Following a tragic fire that broke out on Christmas Day in a Kowloon squatter area in 1953, the Government established Shek Kip Mei Estate as city’s first public housing to resettle 53,000 refugees. Since then, Hong Kong’s public housing model has evolved, but its first public housing prototype, the Mark I Resettlement Block, continues to be recognized today for its unique architectural design and the estate, an urban planning model.

Dr. Rosman Wai will bring us on an in-depth walking tour of Mei Ho House and the wider Shek Kip Mei Estate, including a revitalized flatted factory building, a special feature in public housing estates to meet tenants’ needs. In spite of decade upon decade of redevelopment and regeneration over 70 years, Shek Kip Mei Estate continues to be a vibrant residential community today.

Dr. Wai will guide us through the history from the emergence of the world’s famous public housing programme in Hong Kong to its development through time. We will see first-hand how graded historic buildings such as Mei Ho House have been given a new lease on life today, having been re-purposed into a museum and a youth hostel while the flatted factory into a creative arts hub.

End with an optional local lunch at neighbouring, soon-to-be- redeveloped Choi Hung Estate, which is Instagram-famous worldwide for its eponymous rainbow façade. This tour is recommended for anyone interested in urban planning and design, public housing, social policy, and the history of architecture.

Study Tour | Exploring Central’s Smart Cultural Precinct

Central is Hong Kong’s frenetic business and retail heart, crammed with skyscrapers, swanky malls and luxury hotels set within a historic district. The rich cultural heritage in Central sets the stage for the Smart Cultural Precinct (SCP), ISU’s local initiative that highlights the area within and surrounding the Cultural Triangle, formed by the three key adaptive re-use buildings of PMQ, Central Market, and Tai Kwun.

Join us in an immersive experience of Central Market and Tai Kwun, two of the key historic developments of the Cultural Precinct, that have been beautifully restored and revitalized for a new generation of visitors.

1. Central Market:

Formerly one of Hong Kong’s first wet markets, Central Market is a Grade III historic building that has been revitalised into a ‘Playground for All’ by offering dining outlets, retail stores and cultural experiences that connect visitors to the neighbourhood’s history, tradition and contemporary culture.

2. Central-Mid-Levels Escalators:

The Central–Mid-Levels escalator and walkway system in Hong Kong is the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world. It is a unique pedestrian link, that provides a great view of the bustling city and also was instrumental in the organic regeneration of the core of Central.

3. Tai Kwun:

Tai Kwun is Hong Kong’s beating cultural heart, enabled by The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) in partnership with the Hong Kong Government. A vibrant and welcoming space that brings people together, Tai Kwun is committed to inspiring and enriching the community through arts, culture and heritage.

End the tour in style with a visit to The Magistracy at Tai Kwun: Once known as Hong Kong’s Supreme Court, The Central Magistracy was decommissioned and ceased its judiciary functions in 1984. After being dormant for 40+ years, Black Sheep Restaurants have restored it into a vibrant destination for warm hospitality and thoughtful storytelling. The Black Sheep team will share their insights into the achievements and challenges of this restoration process.

Study Tour | Sai Ying Pun: Engineering in Plain Sight: Revealing hidden construction secrets in a humble Hong Kong neighbourhood

Engineers are the unsung heroes of the urban environment. Often unrecorded and unacknowledged, their efforts are nonetheless embedded in the crevices of buildings and the nuts and bolts of pipelines; many existing for decades, if not centuries.

Join this tour to find out how engineers, in the broadest sense of encompassing architecture, urban planning, sanitation, maritime, and more, have transformed Hong Kong from a barren rock to one of the British empire's leading entrepot in the late 19th century.

We will explore Sai Ying Pun, one of the oldest neighbourhoods on Hong Kong Island and discover the answers to these pertinent but not necessarily well-known questions.

- How did we determine the width of tonglaus

- Hong Kong's ubiqutious vernacular shophouse?

- How did we overcome land shortage in Hong Kong through engineering innovations?

- How did we survive epidemics and improve public health despite Hong Kong's dense population?
